A Light Rail System in Continuous Development

Bergen Light Rail is an established LRT system that 
has been continuously developed since the opening 
of its first line in 2010 (line 1, in orange)

With the opening of Construction Stage 4 in 2022 
(line 2, in green), the network now comprises two 
lines and approximately 27 km of double track, 
supported by a workshop and two depot facilities

The next major step is in preparation: the Northern 
Line (Construction Stage 5 – in blue), which will 
extend the light rail network further north from the 
city centre.

Who are we

Bybanen Utbygging is Vestland County Council’s 
organisation responsible for planning, designing and 
constructing Bergen Light Rail'. 

Our Expertice

We manage complex urban infrastructure projects 
involving:

  •  Public spaces and urban environments
  •  Technical and integrated systems

 

Our projects are delivered in close cooperation with 
public authorities, consultants, contractors, suppliers 
and transport operators.

A System Designed for the City

 

Bergen Light Rail is developed as an open, accessible 
and integrated transport system, with passengers 
and the surrounding city at the centre of planning and 
design

The continued expansion of the network creates 
opportunities not only for new infrastructure, but also 
for innovation, technology and long-term industry 
partnerships.

Construction Stage 5 – A Complex Urban Project

  •  Approximately 12.8 km of mainly segregated 
    double track, with grass, ballast and embedded 
    track
  •  14 new stops, including an underground station
  •  Light rail tunnels, road tunnels, road infrastructure 
    and cycling routes
  •  New stabling facility for light rail vehicles
  • Total journey time of approximately 24 minutes
  •  Maximum speed of 80 km/h
  •  Planned headway of 2 minutes
  •  7 new traction power substations

The contract portfolio below is indicative. Scope, 
contract packaging and procurement timelines may 
be subject to change as the project develops.

Expected Civil Works and Contract Packages

Construction Stage 5 will be developed through 
a range of contract packages and major designand-build contracts, reflecting the complexity and diversity of the project.

The contract portfolio is indicative at this stage, but 
the contracts will vary in scope, size and technical 
content. Some packages will primarily involve 
tunnelling and underground construction, while 
others will focus on at-grade light rail infrastructure 
and surface urban civil works.

Contracts may 
also combine several disciplines, including roads, 
cycling infrastructure, structures and associated 
technical systems.
